I remember so well making this costume about 16 years ago! I worked then and went to school, the short time I was a single mom, and didn't have alot of time. My oldest son wanted to be bat man and I had always made their costumes. This was a rather elaborate costume, the hood has about 7 different pieces alone and is made from lycra (hard to sew with) and the rest is a satin cape pieced together with 5 panels. Then there was the lycra body suit with batman emblem and the knee high shoe covers (boots) out of black vinyl. I had about 16 hours to get the whole costume done so he could wear it to a costume day at a Knotts Berry Farm. I sat down on a Saturday night about 6pm with my sister who was making one also for my nephew, and my mom who was there to help with cutting, pinning, ironing and moral support. (minimal sewing skills) Well about 4 am my sister gave up and went home. Mom layed down on the couch and went to sleep, she couldn't stay up any longer! When she woke up at 6am I was sitting in the same spot still sewing away. She joked that she didn't think she loved anybody that much! I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sooo tired but I had to finish that costume. I finally did about 12:00 pm, son put it on and we took off for the costume event. I remember my son that day, he was so happy and loved his costume so much it made it all worth it. I was exhausted but we walked around and trick or treated and had a good time. Son climbed on every rock and bench so he could jump off. He would turn his head everytime to watch his cape float down. I will never forget it. When Youngest Son pulled it out of the box and ran around with it, wanting to wear it instead of a brand new costume I was very pleased! Having a young child sure makes it easier when the older ones are growing up and away, eases the missing a little. I don't know if I'd survive it without him : )
