More precisely, 7th grade. When I was in seventh grade Lip Smackers were a big deal! I cleaned my young skin with Bonne Bell ten-0-six. I remember so well, a girl in one of my classes named Jill. She had a few more dollars than most of us and was the one who always had everything. She had "Dittos" (THEE brand of girl's pants in the 70's) in every color. There was probably 20 colors and styles or more. She had them all. She also had Lip Smackers in every flavor which was quite a few too. Jill would fill her purse up with them and bring them to school to show the rest of us and let us smell them and a few of her closest friends might be allowed to use them. I don't remember for sure but there was probably more than 20 flavors; strawberry, banana, watermelon, orange soda, rootbeer, etc. They smelled and tasted like their names and they were coveted by all us girls. I think I had 2 or 3 and I would get them for my birthday or in my stocking or basket at Easter. We didn't ordinarily get extras in my household unless there was an event. (Which was actually kind of nice, it made things pretty special). Most of my friends households were like that too. Lip Smackers are still available but they quit making the biggies for quite a few years and only had the little chapstick sizes. Not the same! Recently I found a cotton candy flavored "biggie" at the .99c store and I picked that one up. Not a flavor I remember though.
But yesterday at Target I found DR. Pepper in the biggie size, a flavor that I had and loved in 7th grade. Of course I just had to get it and smeared it on my lips as soon as I got in the car. Brought me back to that time again, Junior high school, friends, lunch periods, and Sadie Hawkins dances : )

It is amazing how scents can just take you back. I remember that product too and it takes me back to my younger years as well. I held on to a product once because it smelled like strawberry milk and took me back to my wee young years in Quebec. I finally let it go because it was so old but nothing transported me back there like that smell. :)
I can't tell you how many times I've thought about the Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers from the 70's. When I was in junior high, you could only get them at the local department store in the cosmetics department. It was a real treat to be able to go buy a new one! My daughter found a pack of the big sizes a few years ago (although not in the flavors I remember)but she refuses to open them because she thinks they'll be worth money some day. Those big sized ones were the best! I loved bubble gum and sprite. I remember the root beer too! Buying one now wouldn't be the same. There was just something about that memory of big lip smackers from my youth that never leaves me.
Great post! I agree with Suzie, nothing takes you back like smells. I remember Lipsmackers many flavors, too, also the scent of my grandmother's Chantilly and my dad's Old Spice.
