I spent a little time in the community garden, not nearly as much as I would have liked what with a few days of rain, a sick child and regular day to day stuff keeping me busy. But we will get there. Both my mom and I really want to have a really nice garden with a lot of nice things we can take home and eat. We worked on getting all the weeds out of our parcel and we have a few volunteer plants that have cropped up to help get us started : ) The two above are looking like yellow squash so far. The ones below I believe are chard because of the red veins running through them.
We have a pretty good little crop of strawberries growing too. So we weeded and turned over the soil a little and watered. My mom bought a tomatoe plant on Earth Day and we went over and planted that. It is a Bush tomatoe plant. I didn't realize there were so many varieties of tomatoes! We want to plant a few different kinds. I'd like to grow some green onions for sure and corn. I grew corn in my backyard one year at a different house than I'm in now where there was some room. It did really well, grew fast and really tall. The corn was a little funny, it was a little mishapen and had kernels that weren't uniform like you see in the stores and some kernels didn't grow in at all in places. It was pretty in the yard though. We want to plant chilis, lettuce, more tomatoes, maybe a berry vine or two.
Later before we left we decided to have a look around at some of the other gardens and get some ideas. Some of the gardens have obviously been around for quite a while and some have quite a bit of work put into them with garden gates, stepping stones and cute signs and decorations.
These cabbage are so beautiful and growing really well in the parcel right next door to ours.
Beets!!
An artichokes. The plant is so big for the amount of artichokes you get, they really spread out and take up a lot of room.
Then there were the flowers. Several gardens had mostly flowers. I would like to have some flowers, ones that I can cut and take home to put on the table.
We are going to try to get over there again tomorrow and hopefully get a few more things planted : )
